Hi Ms. Cooney:
I just had to write because on Monday I took my eight year old daughter to Quabbin Reservoir and she said to me, “I can’t believe I’m actually at the place I’ve been reading about since I was a little girl – and I’m dipping my toes in the Quabbin Reservoir.” It was so beautiful. I bought her LETTING SWIFT RIVER GO when she was just a baby and have read it to her ever since. We just moved back to Boston after living in Chicago for 15 years, and I promised her I’d take her to the place in the book – where we used to go during Mountain Day while at Smith. I told her you also illustrated Miss Rumphius - my all time favorite children's book ever and a present I give to all my friends when they have kids - and Hattie and Emma.
When I told my daughter that you went to Smith she thought that was pretty cool, and she’s ready to pack her bags and start Smith the minute they admit her. I’m also a writer writing adult and YA books, and I had the opportunity last fall to go back to Smith and talk to students about getting published. So much fun.
So, I just wanted to say hello and let you know that there’s one little girl and her mother who think the Quabbin Reservoir is the best kept secret around.
Take care,
Jennifer Guli O’Connell, ‘90

thank you I just wanted to take a moment and say "Thank you." I'm a recent college graduate and determined to have a career in children's book publishing. Books have always been a passion of mine probably due to the fact that my father was such an avid reader and made it a point to read to me every night. You're books were very much a part of that nightly ritual. I ended up majoring in English at the University of New Hampshire and like so many grads, am trying to get my foot in the door. It can be discouraging but picking up books like yours reminds me why I want to make this my career. So again, thank you for your delightful stories and imaginative illustrations. They are my favorite. (Especially Miss Rumphius :-) )

A tribute to Barbara Cooney I first "met" Ms.Cooney when I was teaching First Grade In York County, PA 1971-1977. I retired in 1993 but I never forgot Barbara Cooney.
In 1982 I met her at a book signing in Baltimore (Inner Harbor book store) I have loved her story of Miss Rumphius and all her illustrations. Perhaps the story of Miss Rumphius appealed to me because I love lupines, and the idea of leaving the world a more beautiful place because one has been there speaks to me. Barbara Cooney was a most cordial person to me when she spoke to me on the telephone when I was an adult college student doing a report for Children's Lit class and again most cordial when I met her in Baltimore. She will always be a favorite childrens book author and illustrator for me.
While she is now gone from this planet, I hope she knows that she has made life a happier place for me.
I recently was able to share my collection of books with a young woman Children's Lit student attending Millersville University, my alma mater.

request to quote Dear Ms. Cooney
I would like to put a quote from Miss Rumphius next to my daughter's senior's picture in her high school year book ( the last five sentences in the book) I need the authors written permission to do that.
Would you be willing to allow this? Thanks for considering the request. Your book was her favorite and an inspiration still as she heads off to college.

Letters from Nokomis Montessori Third Graders December 14, 2007
Dear Barbara Cooney,
I like your book Ox Cart Man because the family is poor and they work hard. When I look at the man’s sleeve on the cover, it looks like a skinny canal of blue running down the end of his sleeve. I really like your book Hattie and the Wild Waves because I like the illustrations. I like Hattie because she has something in common with me - she becomes a painter and I’m an artist. I plan to be an author-artist when I grow up.
Sincerely,
Solvi
Dear Barbara Cooney,
I want to be you one day. When your book Hattie and the Wild Waves was made, how old were you? I love your drawings in your book. Are the books about your childhood and are the characters in your family? In the Ox Cart Man, you have lots of wonderful ideas in the story. I love the pictures. I have read three of your books so far. I wish you were in my school.
Sincerely,
Maynam
Dear Barbara Cooney,
I like the fancy houses that Hattie lived in and the wild waves and scenic views. I liked the Ox Cart Man because it has wood illustrations and I liked Portsmouth.
Detail - lover,
Bogdan
Dear Barbara Cooney,
I like Hattie because she made pretty pictures. I like the word “Fraulein.” Why did you use the word “Dummkopf?” I like the Ox Cart Man because of the woodblock paintings and because I like to sew. And I really like maple syrup! What is a yoke? How big was the wooden box of maple sugar?
Sincerely,
Dominic
Dear Barbara Cooney,
I like Ox Cart Man because I like how the man traveled alot. I have something in common with the book - I like to sew alot. But I had never seen an ox until I read this book. What I like about Hattie and the Wild Waves is how you put German in the book. Besides, do you know German? I also like how you put childhood, then you showed them as adults. It is cool how the

author& illustrtions Barbara, you are a joy to my soul. I am retired from teaching watercolors for what seems all my life. But I am an artist, and I just recently started writing children's books. I want to illustrate my own, but of course cannot find much help. Do you have any information you would care to share, or a website to go for help in the final putting together of the information to send in. I have the story written, and the illustrations all drawn, just don't have it all together yet, and can't seem to find much help. I love your book Miss Rumphius, so vivid. Any information I would be appreciative of. Thanks Pam W

Ballet rectial based on Miss Rumphius Like most ballet schools, Metropolitan Ballet of Tacoma has a recital each spring allowing dancers from every level to share their talents and growth. Unique to our school however is that we often base the recital, dances, and costumes on a children's book or story and weave that story through dance. This year, on June 7th, our recital is based on Miss Rumphius. We are excited to share your story and would love permission to use a quote from your story in our advertising (we are giving away packets of Lupine seeds...) We'd also be glad to share the other details of our recital. We'll look forward to hearing from you and hope we can give you more information!

Miss Rumphius turned into a screenplay for a movie
I would like to take Barbara Cooney's book Miss Rumphius and turn it into a screenplay. I would like to take her book and turn it into a movie.
I'm just wondering how I would go about doing that. I need to know who I need to get permission from and how I would go about turning her book into a screenplay.

Thank you Hi Ms. Cooney - I'm so sorry to hear you've passed on. I wanted to tell you that Miss Rumphius and your beautiful words and stunning illustration ignited a life long love of reading. I still have my original copy purchased in 1985 and well loved. I'm so lucky to have found this book and to have loved a piece of your legacy.

Letter to Ginny Pollard Dear Ms. Cooney,
A dear friend of mine, who has been a reading resource teacher for many years, is retiring. Her favorite children's book is Miss Rumphius. She is in many ways like her, having traveled the world before making the world a more beautiful place by sharing her love of reading with children. Could you please send her a letter recognizing her efforts?

Roxaboxen Good morning, Ms. Cooney,
I have always loved your stories. I used to be an elementary librarian and yours were some of my favorite stories to read, though I often had to have tissues nearby as they always touched me.
I am doing some research on C.S. Lewis for a class I'm taking and found that he and his brother created an imaginary world called Boxen and was wondering if your Roxaboxen might have been inspired by that or if it's just a coincidence.
